Where To Insulate In A Home

Apr 02, 2021

There's no substitute for  proper home insulation. It's nearly impossible to overestimate it; that’s why so many people make sure their homes are properly insulated. Installing the right kind of insulation and ensuring it's done properly is the only foolproof way to maintain a steady temperature in your home.

The great thing about proper installation is that it keeps temperature steady and helps protect your home against things like infestation and moisture. The next question might be, where do you need insulation in your home? And while this is a good question, a better question might be: Where don't you need insulation in your home? The answer to that question is nowhere.

But not everyone can insulate every part of their homes at the same time— that's why we're going to start you off with the most important places in your home to insulate.

Attic

You may think your attic is only for storing your stuff. But that's wrong. Your attic is also a barrier that protects your home from heat and cold. However, for your attic to perform its role properly, it needs to be properly insulated.

If you insulate your attic properly, you'll be able to prevent damage done to your home by heat and cold. It will also stop water vapor from eroding your walls. Importantly, it'll protect your roof as well and stop a damaging build-up of heat in your roof from cracking your shingles. That's why you need to pay special attention to your attic insulation— you can pay a heavy price for not doing so.

Ducts

Ducts are the system of pipes and ducts that circulate cooled or heated air through your house. Insulating your ducts provides you with three main benefits. It lowers your utility bill, reduces your energy consumption, and makes your house a lot more comfortable.

The insulation makes sure that the air going through the system stays at the right temperature and won't leak. If you don't have your ducts installed, you will lose roughly up to 30% of the energy you use to heat or cool your home. That's why you need to make sure they are insulated properly.

Cathedral Ceilings

You can say a lot about cathedral ceilings, but you can't say they aren't beautiful. However, beauty isn't the only reason why you should consider having them. Cathedral ceilings also exist to protect you from the elements. If they aren't properly insulated, they wouldn't be able to do so. Since Cathedral ceilings are so complex, these sort of ceilings are rather difficult to insulate, so you will probably need a versed professional to help you with this one.

Basement

Properly insulating your basement will save you a lot of money in the long run. It'll also ensure that your basement is always a dry and comfortable space for you to stay in. Since the basement is usually more connected to living spaces in the house than outside, its walls must be properly insulated. By insulating them, you'll be ensuring that the temperature from outside doesn't enter your living space at all.

Spray foam insulation is one of the most common types of insulation used for basement spaces, and for a good reason too. It super seals your home and makes sure that heat or cold doesn’t escape.

Exterior Walls

Sometimes you can have all the important areas in your home insulated, but your home may still feel too cold or too warm. If that happens to you, chances are your exterior walls need insulation.

Insulating the exterior walls of your home is often expensive, and you will almost always need to hire a professional. But when you get it done, you'll feel the difference in your home's temperature. You may also have an aesthetical reason for insulating your exterior walls too, as insulation almost always improves the appearance of the walls.

Insulating your home is hard work, and it's even harder if you don't know what you're doing. This is why it is imperative that you have certified professionals taking care of your home’s insulation needs.

For this 1930’s-built house, a re-roof allowed our crew of trained professionals to spray down into the roof joists from above. The Foam Comfort Crew, along with the careful coordination of a highly skilled roofing crew, allowed the two trades to work seamlessly to prepare the area for insulation, install a 2lb spray foam solution and then to close, seal and shingle the roof. All old homes built in this area had minimal to no insulation in the roofline and attic areas often involved knee walls and dormers, further adding to the complexity. Once the old roof was removed, a cardboard baffle was secured in the joist cavity and then a 2lb medium density spray foam was applied. The 2lb foam is a vapor barrier and will not allow any condensation to form in the roof cavity below as it provides a monolithic barrier. Removing lathe and plaster from the interior is a major and totally disruptive endeavor, so using an exterior method to insulate, such as what was done in this scenario, can significantly reduce the mess and inconvenience to the inhabitants.

Insulating a camper van is essential for creating a comfortable and livable space. It helps regulate temperature, reduce noise, and prevent condensation. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is the most popular insulation option for camper van builds. It provides a high R-value (a measure of insulation effectiveness) and seals all gaps and cracks. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is also waterproof and prevents condensation.
