As a homeowner, it can be easy to forget about the impact your insulation has on your home. After all, out of sight, out of mind - and few things are as out of sight as the insulation tucked away in your walls. However, if your home is poorly insulated, it can cause a wide variety of problems.

Thankfully, you don’t have to open your walls and look at your insulation to see if there’s a problem. These 5 common signs will let you know if you have poor insulation so that way you can hire a professional to prevent any damages and avoid incurring extra expenses.

1. High energy bills

One of the most important jobs of home insulation is to keep heat in during the winter and coolness in during the summer, all while keeping the opposite out. However, if you have poor insulation, your heating and cooling unit may struggle to keep up with regulating your home’s temperature. This can lead to higher energy bills as your system runs constantly in order to maintain the right temperature.

However, high energy bills aren’t the only temperature-related problem that come with poor insulation.

2. Hot and cold rooms

Depending on your home, insulation may be good in some areas and poor in others. While it’s normal to have some fluctuation in temperature between rooms, if you’re noticing extremely cold or hot rooms in comparison to the rest of your home, it may indicate a problem with your home insulation.

This is especially true in rooms with at least one exterior wall, which would then need the proper amount of insulation to account for the outside temperature.

3. Pests in your home

Pests come in many forms - insects such as ants and flies, spiders, and even small mammals like squirrels. They can also come in many forms of entries in your house, and sometimes, poor insulation is a welcome mat for them.

Proper insulation is neither too thick or thin. This perfect balance is one reason why foam insulation has become so popular. However, if your insulation isn’t thick enough, it can provide entries for pests to get into your home. This problem is made worse if the insulation is poor in areas with external walls or in your attic.

4. Attic problems

When it comes to poor insulation, your attic is one of the number one places to look. This is because you can find a wide variety of different problems in your attic, most of which come from poor insulation.

First, poor insulation can cause mold due to drafts. In the darkness and humidity of your attic, mold can thrive. Your attic is also one of the more common places to find a sharp temperature change or draft.

If you live in an area with a lot of frozen precipitation, you may also notice ice dams in your attic. Ice dams are also caused by poor insulation.

5. Drafts

Drafts can have a variety of causes, but one of the most common is a problem with your insulation. Drafts can contribute to a lot of the other issues we talked about on this list, especially higher electric bills and colder rooms.

6. Final Thoughts

Home insulation problems have many signs, and it’s important to check regularly to make sure you’re not experiencing any. If you are experiencing any of these top five signs of poor insulation, however, you may want to contact a professional for more advice.
